Nashville Number System not working for chords outside of the 7 scale tones

November 14, 2025
When I tried rendering charts containing unconventional chords that are outside of the natural 7-note diatonic scale, the root numbers do not appear.
For example, an Ab in the key of C would not be rendered as a b6 - it would just not appear.

WorshipTools Charts only supports chords within the natural 7-note diatonic scale. That’s why chords outside the scale (like Ab in the key of C) don’t show root numbers—they simply aren’t recognized by the system.
What you can do:
- Enter the chord manually (e.g., “Ab”) so it displays as text.
- Use ChordPro® formatting, which lets you specify non-diatonic chords directly so they appear correctly in Charts.
In short: Root numbers won’t generate for chords outside the diatonic scale, but you can still display them by manually entering or formatting with ChordPro®.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply.

What do you mean by using ChordPro® formatting?
I tried writing in chords outside of the diatonic scale in the WorshipTools ChordPro® editor, but they do not appear. As you mentioned, it seems WorshipTools charts only supports chords within the natural 7-note diatonic scale. Is there perhaps a workaround as you are describing by using ChordPro® formatting?
